I had a short story returned by a fanzine editor---a Next-Gen, Dr. Who crossover---because they didn't know Who the Doctor was.
I had a few beers, banged out a new story in four hours, sent it off then went to bed; that one was accepted.
It's worse than you think, this happened about 25 years ago---in the story, the 7th Doctor and Ace visit the Enterprise, because he needs to borrow something from Guinan.
I was truly stunned no one on the editorial board of this particular fanzine had any idea Who the Doctor was, but they liked the story I hammered out overnight while drunk.

Wasn't there like 8 or 10 different people that played the character of the Doctor and his assistant.
I may have to watch that show again the next time I'm at my folks (they have BBC America on dish).
